Joseph Izatt, the chairman of the biomedical engineering department at Duke University, USA, and a prominent figure in the field of optical coherence tomography, died on 7 April 2024, after a health emergency occurred while he was flying his plane near Raleigh-Durham airport. His passing was unexpected, and his friends, family and the optics community are profoundly feeling this loss.
