FEMTO: A Student-Made Optics Outreach Program from Université Laval

Anne-Sophie Poulin-Girard, a Ph.D. student and lecturer at Université Laval, Quebec, Canada, helped create the optics outreach program Framework of Educative Material for Teaching Optics (FEMTO). She spoke with OPN about why and how the project came about.

OSA and SPIE student chapter members at Université Laval created FEMTO to increase high school and college students’ interest in optics and photonics. Using a dynamic set of resources, including experiments, teaching kits, and real and virtual laboratories, FEMTO presents the science of light in a bilingual format to encourage Canadian students to pursue degrees and careers in the field.
