Optics in Colombia

In Colombia, science and technology may be the key to future growth. For the past two decades, the Red Nacional de Optica (RNO), or Colombian National Network on Optics, has been strengthening optics research in Colombia, promoting international collaboration and opening up new possibilities for Colombian students abroad. .

Colombia is making progress toward developing its scientific strength. Although Colciencias—the government’s organization for scientific research—has seen its budget significantly reduced since 1996, the government has recently expressed its awareness of the importance of building a scientific infrastructure. Moreover, this year Colciencias has been given the status of an independent administrative department with its own budget. It is now responsible for developing S&T policies geared toward improving the country’s social and economic conditions.
