Refraction of light
This photo captures the refraction of light through a 50 micron diameter opto-mechanical microfluidic resonator, with a water droplet in the internal passage. The resonator has been developed for high bandwidth optical measurements on the mechanical properties of microparticles (e.g. cells, viruses) as they rapidly flow through the device. Such information, which previously has not been used in diagnostics, could help better understand the biomechanical effects of diseases and drug treatments.
