Although digital cameras are ubiquitous (as are books about them), few books take an overtly physics-based approach to digital photography. A freelance photographer with a Ph.D. in physics, Andy Rowlands combines a passion for photography with a passion for teaching physics. Over five chapters, the book covers the topics of image optics, color, diffraction, noise models and image quality.
The author recommends the book as a graduate-level textbook, given the heavily mathematical treatment. A drawback for using the book for teaching is the lack of application problems in the text. Also missing is an index for the key terms in the book. On the plus side, the book includes many color charts and images (as expected to illustrate photographic concepts), a list of acronyms, and bibliography lists in each of the five chapters.
