Sarper Ozharar, now a senior researcher at NEC Laboratories America, USA, has worked in both the academic and corporate worlds, and he recently partnered with an entomologist for research on using fiber optic cables to sense cicadas. He says that keeping an open mind and thinking creatively about collaborations can help solve some of society’s most complex problems. OPN spoke with Ozharar about his career transitions, the impact of the cicada project and his advice for early-career scientists.
