“More than 6,500 scientists, including 57% of the professors in the nation’s top 20 university physics departments, have declared themselves opposed to President Reagan’s Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) and have pledged not to accept any SDI research funds. … Physicists have expressed particular concern that SDI is diverting large numbers of scientists from more promising civilian research, with the result being lost momentum and possible shortages of scientists in other areas.”
