This has been a remarkable year—not only because it marks the 100th anniversary of The Optical Society (OSA), but also because it saw one of the great discoveries of the 21st century: the first detection of gravitational waves, by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO). OSA President Alan Willner enjoys noting that “optics put the ‘LI’ in ‘LIGO’” whenever the opportunity arises. And truly, without optical technology, LIGO itself wouldn’t have been possible.
