Optical 3-D gesture recognition (GR) represents a paradigm shift in human-computer interaction. Gesture recognition in itself is nothing new: Consider how computer keyboards, mice and remote controls use switches, location sensors and accelerometers to turn human gestures into computer commands. However, with optical GR, a computer uses only light to get information about what a human wants. Because of its simplicity, GR may soon become omnipresent in our everyday life in ways we can barely imagine.
