Koç University in Istanbul is leading efforts to advance optics research and education in Turkey.

Turkey was formed from the ashes of the Ottoman Empire, which collapsed at the end of World War I. Like the United States, Turkey had to fight for its independence. Under the leadership of the military and political genius Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (the Father of the Turks), the country was liberated from a five-year occupation (1918-1922), and it emerged as a democratic, secular, unitary and constitutional republic.
