Using Optics to Detect Skin Cancer
New techniques in confocal microscopy could make it easier for dermatologists to distinguish between a benign skin spot and one that can kill.
Most people have at least a few moles—growths made up of a cluster of melanocytes, or pigment-producing cells—somewhere on their skin. Most of the time, these spots, which are also called nevi, simply sit there and don’t change over the course of a lifetime.
