A Sustainable Future for Semiconductors
FUTUR-IC aims to use electronic–photonic integration to create high-performance microchip technology while minimizing environmental impact.
Each year, the world produces more than 50 million metric tons of electronic waste. Electricity demand and heat generation from data centers that enable applications like artificial intelligence (AI) and streaming video continue to skyrocket. Meanwhile, the semiconductor industry confronts potential physical limits to transistor size and grapples with government regulations to report on sustainability, while lacking an innovative, sustainability-skilled STEM workforce.
